Christmas in Old Nauvoo

I mentioned a few weeks ago that Garrett and I were going to be Joseph and Emma Smith for our church's Christmas Party, themed "Christmas in Old Nauvoo".

For those of you wondering what the heck I'm talking about, Joseph Smith was the first prophet of our religion who helped restore the gospel of Jesus Christ back to the earth. His wife was Emma Smith. These two people are probably my greatest heroes. They sacrificed much to bring forth the Book of Mormon and to establish the church. Joseph ultimately gave his life for the cause and was martyred in 1844. Nauvoo was a city established by the early church members where they tried to escape persecution. To learn more about Joseph and Emma Smith and the city of Nauvoo, go here.

Needless to say, Garrett and I felt humbled and honored to get to play these roles for our Christmas party. We were also overwhelmed. We had lines to memorize, costumes to find and put together, rehearsals to attend. I couldn't find a dark wig for Emma, and I wasn't about to dye my hair; so this Christmas, Emma was a blonde. :)
In the end, it all turned out really well, the program was awesome, and we had a lot of fun.
And here we are:

Like the sweet hair and dress? Garrett said I looked homely. I don't know what he was talking about.
In this next picture, Garrett is holding a copy of the Book of Mormon that was published to look like the original first copies from the 1820s. He bought the book after our trip to Nauvoo this last summer.

I didn't have anything pioneer-ish for Kenadie to wear, so I just put her in a dress and bonnet.

I think she cried during 80% of our play. It was great. Luckily, some sweet lady took her out into the hallway where I think her screams echoed even louder.
But what a CUTE little pioneer baby!

Merry Christmas, from Old Nauvoo!
